But The Line of Beauty is a long book, and even if hollingjurst skip the sex and the snorting there’s plenty left to enjoy. The Line of Beauty —is an elegant portrait of the rise and fall of a recent Oxford graduate playing at being privileged.
As Leo lives with his religious mother and Nick feels restricted in the Fedden household the two conduct their sexual affair almost entirely outside in public parks and side streets. It was one of two books I brought on my 20 hour flight to Singapore, where I was planning on enjoying, at holinghurst last, some time to myself to read.
The ellipses in the narrative, you realise, have enacted Nick’s own suppression of his feelings. Smartly assuming control of the situation, Nick relieves her of the contents of the cutlery drawer, and chivalrously holds her hand until she calms down. It is neither pretentious nor self-serving. Nick is in pursuit of beauty of a certain type.

If you value style, wit, and social satire in your reading, don’t miss this elegant and passionate novel.
This story of Nick Guest Sometimes one has to admit that one’s preconceptions about a book are entirely wrong. I’m mixed on this one. Return to Book Page.

Isn’t the main character in that Nick too? The sex wasn’t shocking but hollinfhurst did get tiresome- I’d rather have learned more about the families.
Thatcher hollinghurrst bless them with an appearance. Anyway, the way he makes this guy and the relationship I developed with him as the reader was just awesome in the older sense of the term.
