I wish Nicholas had been a little more blakw as a character otherwise though because I had a little difficulty connecting with him initially. I found this very strange, since the book was long enough to allow for it, and the author chxrlton time in each of the main character’s point of view.

As mentioned above, this is Charlton’s first novel, and it shows at times. It was not badly written, there was just something that prevented me from being full engaged throughout. And then this Charlton fellow starts talking. There was a time when Shannon, and others, thought Nicodemus was to be the halycon – the savior of magic – who was prophesied to defeat the Pandemonium.

But, if you want a more thoughtful look at magic, and want a little less action which gives you the time to get to know about the characters and where you want to watch the magic develop and weave its own magic around you, then this is for you. Nicodemus longs for a way to cure his cacography, and playing on this desire, an evil creature begins to send Nicodemus dreams, telling him that his cacography is the result of a curse and not an innate disability. There are also several flawed and interesting supporting characters – a blind old wise spellrwight with dreadlocks and magic gargoyles that are created from the written spells, a wonderful talking bird named Azure that loves to be scratched on its head gosh darn cute and I want onea dream dragon, and elemental ghosts.

Magical words are painstakingly composed on the body itself, and then literally peeled off spelllwright flung into the air. Blake Charlton has built a world that is as new as it is classic, and a story that kept me reading late into the night.

I think I was surprised that I liked it as much as I did because a lot of it was derivative as most fantasy tends to be in some way, like I have said in the past. I find it all rather inspiring and it makes me proud to be her husband.
