I first read this book 3 years ago, all in one sitting. Father Brown and the Ten Commandments. Makes for a really intriguing way to build g.m.chesterton story. This, which is true of all the churches and republics of history, is also true of the most trivial parlour game or the most unsophisticated meadow romp.

Smith is wanted on charges of burglary, desertion of a spouse, polygamyand attempted murder. I can’t wait to lead a discussion on it. I am going to hold a pistol to the head of the Modern Man.

Without a doubt, Mwnalive Smith is one of the most endearing characters I’ve encountered in all of literature. When poor old Adam had gone out gardening Arthur will go out gardeningthe other sort came along and wormed himself in, nasty old snake.

Inhe was asked to contribute a few magazine articles on art criticism, and went on to become one of the most prolific writers of all time.

Carried out through the novel, though, it was for me first confusing and then intriguing. I won’t spoil the ending, but let’s just say that Innocent is himself a paradox. Get a long way off it: The best part is reading the dialogue that occurs around him, as onlookers try to figure him out. Keep clear of the man who looks in at the window and tries to understand you. Chesterton detailing a popular theme both in his own philosophy, and in Christianity, of the ” holy fool “, such as in Dostoevsky ‘s The Idiot and Cervantes ‘ Don Quixote.


He who overcomes pain and fear will himself be God. But though it shocks everyone it touches, Chesterton tells us not to fear: Like Mary Poppinsthis man who is tentatively identified by lodger Arthur Inglewood as an ex-schoolmate named Innocent Smith is accompanied by a great wind, and he breathes new life into the household with his games and antics.

God lets us turn g.k.chestertom things into toys by his great gift of distance. But he is smart and philosophical and likes to point his gun at folk. He has a fantastic understanding of the abundance of life that is present in creation, does a great job pointing out the falsity of modern nihilist thought, and is a genius as he uses paradox to illustrate many of his points. I don’t argue with this.

Excellent, GKC again challenges his readers to remember how amazing the world we live in really is. The idea behind the text is best described by Chesterton himself in his Autobiography: Recommended to me by Amy.

The first time I picked up this book, I was working in a library. How different this book reads when you know where it is going and that it is worth getting there! All seems to be well with the world. But I shall not use it to kill him—only to bring him to life. This is quite possibly my favorite book. He fires bullets near people to make them value life; the house he breaks into is his own; he travels around the world only to return with renewed appreciation for his house and family; and the women he absconded with are actually his wife Mary, posing as a spinster under different aliases so they may repeatedly re-enact their courtship.

Chesterton is definitely my favorite author – he has brought life to my Christian walk. Innocent Smith is such an interesting character who shows that he is not the oddball and g.kk.chesterton one crazy, but ourselves as we settle down to life not seeing things afresh.
